What is inline hockey?

Embedded Gallery2 is not available.
Inline hockey is probably one of the fastest sports played on planet Earth! It is extremely fast paced, and and action packed, making it a visually exciting game to watch.
Face off
The sport is similar to ice hockey with the exception of it's players donning inline hockey skates in place of ice hockey skates. Inline hockey is played with 4 players + 1 goalie on the court for each team, each team can usually have up to 16 players and 2 goalies. As the game requires alot of sprinting, line changes are very frequent, almost every 2-3 min.

Inline Hockey Skates
Inline hockey skates are quite different from regular inline skates in terms of weight and design. As hockey is really all about speed, hockey skates are designed to be as lightweight as possible while providing good ankle support. A shorter chassis frame is also essential for quick turns and hockey stops.

Inline Hockey Rules
A regulation World Championship game is played with 2 periods of 20 min duration each, with a 5 min break in between. The inline hockey rink size can vary between 20-30 meters in width and 40-60 meters in length. The official FIRS rules can be found at www.rollersports.org

Inline Hockey Tournaments
At the highest level, there are 2 World Championships held annually. One is organised by FIRS, the international federation for rollersports, and the other organised by IIHF, the international ice hockey federation.

The top teams that emerge from the FIRS World Championships go on to participate in the World Games later in the year. The World Games are organised and governed by the International World Games Association (IWGA), under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

It is hoped by many inline hockey players that inline hockey will one day finally be elevated to an Olympic sport.

Despite not being an Olympic sport, inline hockey is still very popular with many players participating in the North American Roller Hockey Championships (NARCh) where prize money reaches in the tens of thousands US$.

Inline hockey has also reached the sunny shores of Singapore where it started even in the late 70's in the form of roller hockey (on quad skates). In fact 2 of the teams that are still playing and recruiting members since the 80's are team Strikers and Pirahnas.

In the past 10 years, Women's inline hockey has also emerged, and Singapore has sent both Men's and Women's Teams to represent the country at the FIRS World Championships. Hockey players interested in trying out for the National team may contact Rollersports Singapore, the NSA(National Sporting Associaion) for more infomation.
